Cardno, now Stantec was engaged by the City of Melbourne to provide a safety design that met security requirements and also accommodated the free-flowing pedestrian access around Flinders Street Station.
Flinders Street Station has been an iconic gathering place in Melbourne for decades.
Four years ago, just days before Christmas, a man drove a car into pedestrians at the busy Flinders Street intersection, killing one man and injuring 16 other people.
The Victorian government and the City of Melbourne took steps to increase public safety in Melbourne’s CBD by upgrading security and installing steel bollards at one of Melbourne’s busiest and most prominent pedestrian sites.
Our team was engaged to provide a safety design that met security requirements that also accommodated the free-flowing pedestrian access around Flinders Street Station.
We undertook extensive investigations of underground services that may be affected as well as identifying the shallow roadway and footpaths available.
Bollards were the preferred choice as they offer minimal impact to the surrounding environment. |
