In Fonds-Saint-Denis, AFD and Martiniques Department of the Environment, Planning and Housing (DEAL) are financing a study to reinforce and stabilize the embankments, in order to initiate reinforcement work seismic protection of the towns school, also designated as a place of refuge in the event of an earthquake. Fonds-Saint-Denis is a small town of 700 inhabitants located in the heart of Martinique, on the slopes of Mount Pelée. The school welcomes more than thirty students, their teachers and site agents. It was built in 1954 on the heights of the city center. Today it is a vulnerable building because it rests on an embankment listed as highly exposed to the risk of landslides, inherent in the seismic risk. DESCRIPTION At the beginning of the 2000s, the previous mandates commissioned the first studies, which made it possible to report on the risk of landslides incurred in the area under consideration. The current mayor of the town wants to put in place the necessary actions for the safety of the site and its users. Thus, it is necessary to carry out a geotechnical study of reinforcement and stabilization. On the basis of the conclusions of the study, an action plan for the paraseismic reinforcement of the school will be set up and carried out. IMPACTS This study is a real decision-making tool. These conclusions will make it possible to precisely apprehend the situation and to define a clear guideline in order to fight effectively against the seismic vulnerability of the municipal school. Work to secure the site can be undertaken on the basis of a reliable analysis. |
