Project Detail |
Mauritanias maternal and newborn health system is fragile and benefits a small part of the population. The result: one of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world. This is why AFD is helping to consolidate and expand the healthcare offer, nationally and regionally.
The maternal and neonatal health improvement program aims to strengthen the health care offer in Mauritania, in particular in Assaba, one of the poorest regions of the country. AFD is supporting this program with a grant of 7 million euros. The Mauritanian state is also participating in its financing to the tune of 700,000 euros.
The objective of the program is threefold:
Widen access to the obstetrical package nationwide by setting it up in new health centers and training their staff, with particular emphasis on Assaba.
Testing new devices in Assaba to improve the use of care and the quality of care: the program notably provides for the creation of shelters to accommodate isolated women, the acquisition of ambulances or the development of blood donation for transfusions.
Support the Mauritanian Ministry of Health and its regional directorates to assess the impact of the program and sustain its effects.
