Project Detail |
The proposed operation aims to use the proceeds from the investment of ZimFund resources, totalling USD 1,787,000 for the additional financing of Phase 2 of the Zimbabwe Water Supply and Sanitation Emergency Rehabilitation Project (UWSSRP). The first UWSSRP was approved in April 2011 and its execution was completed in June 2015. The project was being implemented in six urban centres (Harare, Chitungwiza, Mutare, Masvingo, Kwekwe, and Chegutu). The objective of the project was to resuscitate and restore the capacities of the water and wastewater treatment facilities. It was necessary to design a follow up project to further the benefits and consolidate the gains from the original Phase I project by a shift in focus towards strengthening the network and sustained institutional support. In this regard, the UWSSRP phase II was designed with a focus in Harare, Chitungwiza, Ruwa and Redcliff. The main project objective did not change and was to provide support for improving water and sewerage network reticulation performance and improving non-revenue water (NRW), strengthening commercial aspect, enhancing service delivery efficiency in the beneficiary municipalities and improving sustainability. During the project evaluation of UWSSRPI phase I, it was observed that some results and outcomes were not achieved in the beneficiary municipalities of Chitungwiza, Mutare, Masvingo, Kwekwe and Chegutu because some additional works became necessary during project implementation mainly caused by further deterioration in the infrastructure. As such it was deemed necessary to utilize any savings, interest and earnings from investments to address these gaps under the consolidation works project. The present operation consists in financing the activities "Chitungwiza sewerage collectors and ancillary works" of the UWSSRP Phase II. In other words, it involves the rehabilitation of some sewer collectors and outfalls in Chitungwiza in order to improve the drainage of wastewater from residential areas to the Zengeza wastewater treatment plant.
Project Objectives
The objective of the project is to improve the gains of the UWSSRP project in resuscitating and regaining the capacities of the wastewater collection, disposal and treatment facilities, restoring and stabilizing service delivery through strengthening the sewage reticulation networks and giving sustained institutional support to the Municipality of Chitungwiza. |
