Project Detail |
The proposed operation is a $430,000 grant to Guinea to fight the spread of the Ebola hemorrhagic fever epidemic throughout the country. Since mid-February 2021, Guinea has been facing a resurgent Ebola-related epidemic, following the major crisis of 2014. This new epidemic comes against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, which poses both health and socio-economic challenges to the West African country. The funding from the African Development Bank will enable Guinea to strengthen the diagnostic and sample management capacity of six regional laboratories. These laboratories will receive sample collection kits, reagents, and infection prevention and control equipment. Four regional laboratories will also receive GeneXPert equipment and genome sequencers, and biologists will be trained in Ebola virus diagnosis. The technical platform of the countrys laboratories will thus be strengthened in terms of genomic surveillance in the response to Ebola. The project will also contribute to improving infection prevention and control, as well as case management in targeted health facilities and in the community by providing personal protective equipment, triage, isolation and case management facilities. Project Objectives The overall objective is to help reduce the lethality (for those already sick) and the risk of spread of the Ebola VHF epidemic. The project aims to strengthen the Guinean health system by supplying all targeted health facilities with essential medicines and other health products for the care of Ebola survivors. The project will also enable Guinea to intensify its awareness-raising operations to improve the populations perception of the health response. |
