Project Detail |
Overall goal
The aim of the project is to improve the quality of animal products in Uganda through better animal husbandry. The tropical climate in Uganda causes a high infection pressure and leads to a high use of drugs, including antibiotics, in cattle breeding, which is a major health hazard for both animals and consumers of animal products such as milk and meat. The Austrian companies Phytofit and Solan, specializing in plant-based feed additives and feed for farm animals, are working with Ugandan experts to set up a trading and production branch in Uganda for the import and local production of plant-based feed additives.
Expected results
From 2021, 32 tons of plant-based feed additives are to be sold in Uganda. 200 veterinarians and 50 female vets are trained in the use of herbal products instead of antibiotics and antiparasitics. 400 farmers benefit from training courses to increase the yield in cattle breeding and to reduce the health impact on humans and animals. 80 women farmers are trained in the cultivation of medicinal herbs and thus receive new income opportunities.
Target group / beneficiaries
The target group are 100 herb farmers in the vicinity of the production facilities in Minani & Busheni and their umbrella organization, the Minani Farmers Association. In addition, there are 250 veterinarians & paravets as well as 800 cattle farmers nationwide together with the national animal breeding authority NAGRC and the Vet. Med. University MAKERERE, who benefit directly from training and the use of the products.
Activities
The project measures include the establishment of a local sales and production branch as well as the establishment of sales channels. In addition, training courses for veterinarians, agricultural advisors and farmers are offered, which are accompanied by studies at Makarere University. At the same time, a local production of medicinal herbs is being set up. Both the companys own model farm and 100 smallholders will supply the raw materials for local production. |
