Project Detail |
Cobalt is a crucial input material for batteries found in many consumer electronics. The demand for cobalt is expected to grow at a rate of 5% per year and most of cobalt is sourced from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Currently, over 50% of cobalt comes from DRC of which a smaller, but still significant part (+-20%) is mined artisanally (ASM). A detailed risk assessment highlights that the risk of child labour is highest at the start of the supply chain of cobalt, at the artisanal mine sites. This project aims to come with sustainable solutions to combat child labour at the ASM mine site level. |
