The project represents one of the main components of the Sinai Peninsula Development Program, and aims at increasing agricultural production, strengthening the connection between the Sinai Peninsula and the Delta region, providing additional job opportunities, and improving the services available to the residents, through the transfer and treatment of about 5 million m3/day of water from the Bahr El Bakar drain suitable for the irrigation of about 330 thousand acres to produce the appropriate agricultural crops. The project includes the construction of a channel having a length of about 20 km, along with all its necessary facilities and equipment, the construction of pumping stations to transport Bahr El Bakar drain water from the west of the Suez Canal to its east, the construction of a treatment plant with a capacity of about 5 million m3/day, in order to establish farms and barns, raise livestock, as well as support agro-industrial facilities.
The project also includes the preparation of the necessary studies, design and bid documents, and the provision of the necessary consultancy services to supervise the works and provide follow up during the maintenance period.
The project includes the following main components:
Construction of main facilities.
Consultancy works.
Land acquisition.
Set up of farms, cattle raising barns and agro-industrial production facilities.
The Arab Fund loan will carry interest of 2.5% per annum, and will be repayable over 30 years including a 6 year grace period.
The Armed Forces Engineering Authority will be the implementing body for the project, while the Ministry of Housing, Facilities and Urban Communities will be the beneficiary of the loan.
With the signing of this loan, the Arab Fund’s total contribution to financing projects in Egypt amounts to KD 1,708.15 Million. |
