Project General Description
The present intervention relates to the Mkondvo-Ngwavuma Water Augmentation Program (MNWAP) Study. The project consists of conducting feasibility studies for the construction of a dam on the Mkondvo River at Mahamba Gorge and the transfer of water to the Mahosha River (a tributary of the Ngwavuma River), for the purpose of increasing the low flow of the Ngwavuma River. It was designed because of the key role of agriculture and water development in supporting inclusive growth, job creation and poverty alleviation in Eswatini. The project aims to contribute to food security, poverty reduction and resilience to climate change by supporting the development of water and irrigation infrastructure in Eswatini. The MNWAP will provide very important employment and income generation opportunities for women and youth. The study has four (04) main components, namely: (i) Mpakeni Dam and Water Supply and Irrigation Development Plan and Bidding Documents, (ii) Feasibility Study for the Mkhondvo-Ngwavuma Water Resources Augmentation Project, (iii) Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment, and (iv) Detailed Design and Bidding Documents for the Water Resources Augmentation Option.
Project Objectives
The overall goal of study is to contribute to food security, poverty reduction and resilience to climate change, through supporting water and irrigation infrastructure development in Eswatini. The specific objectives of the intervention are to: i) conduct feasibility studies for the construction of dams at Mahamba Gorge and Ethemba on the Mkhondvo River to enable the transfer of water to the Ngwavuma River; and for the construction of a dam at Mpakeni on the Ngwavuma River to enable the conveyance of water to downstream areas for irrigation; ii) prepare detailed designs and bidding documents for the new dams to be constructed at Mahamba Gorge, Ethemba and Mpakeni as well as the conveyance system to irrigation areas downstream; and iii) mobilize resources for the construction of the dams and conveyance system through an investor conference. |
