OBJECTIVE
The objective of the project is to strengthen the capacity of the public health sector in Serbia through providing emergency support, including the purchase and provision of medical protective supplies and equipment.
DESCRIPTION
The government of the Republic of Serbia has taken rigorous measures to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus. After declaration of the State of Emergency on March 16, 2020, strict measures have been applied progressively, such as: (i) closure of all kindergartens, primary schools, high schools and universities; (ii) forced quarantine for all those above 65 years of age; (iii) a curfew starting from March 18, 2020; (iv) closure of public parks, gyms, restaurants, bars and shopping malls, (v) closure of all national borders for passenger transport and shut-down of the international airport; (vi) shut-down of inner-city public transport (except for a few special lines in the morning and afternoon for those that have to go work and cannot work from home), intercity bus and rail transport; and (vii) a mandatory 15 days or 28 days self-quarantine for those entering Serbia depending on the country of origin. All these measures helped the country contain the COVID-19 virus and preserve the lives of people. As per the World Health Organization, by 4 May 2020, there have been 9,464 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 193 deaths in the country. The countrys medical system is now under high pressure to provide adequate protection to medical workers and proper treatment to patients, facing the increasing number of confirmed cases.
The proposed Project aims to provide support to improve protective measures in hospitals in Serbia. Activities under the Project will cover, but not be limited to, the procurement of medical supplies, medical and personal protective consumables, medical equipment (i.e., monitors and ventilators), reagents, COVID-19 tests, medicines for treatment, etc. |
