Ultrahigh bypass ratio engines put to the test
One of the most radical new engine architectures promising to make aircraft eco-friendlier is the ultrahigh bypass ratio engines. These engines, which are being developed as a technology demonstrator in the European research programme Clean Sky 2, are a conventional shrouded turbofan-type configuration with a much higher bypass ratio. When a turbofan engine operates at ground, a vortex can form and be ingested by the engine intake, which can strongly affect the fan operation. The EU-funded InVIGO project will conduct wind-tunnel tests and computational fluid dynamics simulations to generate a comprehensive database on key vortex characteristics. Studying vortex characteristics and how they affect fan aeromechanics is vital to ensuring safe fan operation. |
