A project that aims to strengthen social cohesion in downtown Johannesburg through the participative organization of sports and leisure activities in nine public parks. Since 2017, Sport for Social Change Network (SSCN) has been collaborating with the services of the city of Johannesburg to organize sports and recreational activities in downtown parks, with a pilot project in two parks. SSCN now wishes to extend and develop this model to nine parks in the city center, and launch a mobile activation activity using an equipped van that will allow it to reach disadvantaged areas further away from the heart of the city. In this context, the association will recruit and train 18 sports coordinators from the districts concerned and will provide the means necessary for the organization of sports activities. The AFD grant will also allow SSCN to develop its activities as a network of associations promoting social ties through sport in Johannesburg and in Africa, and to initiate a peer-to-peer exchange with French organizations. IMPACTS Activation of downtown Johannesburg parks: enhancement of public spaces in the city, appropriation by neighboring audiences, reduction of crime in and around the parks, and engagement of young coaches in professional and civic life; Increase in group sports and recreational activity: improvement of physical health and self-confidence, feeling of social belonging and social cohesion; Improvement of SSCN practices by exchange with French organizations experienced in the use of sport as a vector of social cohesion in urban areas. |
