Haiti Project Notice - VIL NOU PI BÈL - FOR A SUSTAINABLE, INCLUSIVE AND RESILIENT CITY

Project Notice

PNR 38290
Project Name VIL NOU PI BÈL - FOR A SUSTAINABLE, INCLUSIVE AND RESILIENT CITY
Project Detail Jérémie, like most of Haitian territory, is extremely vulnerable to natural hazards. In addition, the city suffers from a lack of planning and its territorial management is unsuitable to respond to the current demographic pressure. The result is a chaotic development of the city which does not take into account exposure to natural risks and is not associated with an offer of basic services. What is more, chronic poverty does not allow the poorest inhabitants to inhabit frequent disasters. The project thus aims both to increase the citys resilience to natural disasters, and to strengthen its socio-economic fabric through: risk awareness by Risk and Disaster Management (GRD), sustainable rehabilitation of housing, public spaces and historic heritage, widespread access to basic services, including sanitation and lighting, revitalizing sources of income. Nearly 10,000 people will benefit from development projects, solar lighting systems and / or the creation of income-generating activities. The entire city will benefit from the benefits of the project. NGO Founded in 1945, CARE has been present in Haiti since 1954. It works in particular to empower vulnerable children and women. CARE is present in 93 countries with more than 63 million people. In emergency response situations or in long-term aid contexts, CARE tackles the root causes of poverty. PARTNERS Groupe URD is an independent think tank committed to the exchange of knowledge and collective learning. It supports aid actors in the process of improving the quality of their interventions. Local institutions are involved in the process. The project is articulated with the interventions of the town hall of Jérémie, UN Habitat, the Office of the Secretary of State for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities, the Ministry of Public Transport, Transport and Communications, the National Directorate of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Civil Protection and the National Heritage Preservation Institute. EXPECTED RESULTS Local governance is strengthened: participatory and inclusive approach to DRM and spatial planning; actions aimed at improving living conditions. Housing improvement is achieved: small development projects; improvement of the citys heritage and natural values ??management capacities; provision of basic services and equipment. The economy of the city of Jérémie is revitalized. The innovations and knowledge produced by the project are identified, disseminated and shared within national and regional platforms, for advocacy on resilience and official development assistance.
