Greece Project Notice - Underwater Passive Aquatic Listening Network System For Smart Monitoring Of High Impact Weather Events - Mypal-NET

Project Notice

PNR 35077
Project Name Underwater passive aquatic listening network system for smart monitoring of high impact weather events - myPAL-NET
Project Detail "A smart passive aquatic listener network (myPAL-NET) is a user friendly and simple in use and inexpensive in deployment system consist of two or three small in size and thus cheap in construction and maintenance low consumption passive detectors (called myPAL). They are running autonomy (with their own power source). The ""smart"" algorithm that is embedded in each myPAL works independently for the detection, classification and quantification of the different environmental (rainfall rate and occurrence, wind speed, roughness of see, bubbles, salinity, landslides, etc.), biological (marine mammal calls, etc.) and anthropogenic (seismic activity, off-shore drilling operations, shipping, construction, sonars, fishing, mineral exploration, etc.) underwater sound sources. Appropriate algorithm will be developed for “smart” duty cycle operation and data acquisition as well as automated pre-process analysis (called smart PAL). myPAL-NET covers a large area. Each one talks to each other via the surface platforms. The system will be autonomous, interoperable, easy to deployed with low power consumption and designed for prolonged immersion as required. myPAL-NET is a cost-effective solution, which can replace various surface meteorological and oceanographic sensors attached on large mooring systems, from one sensor (myPAL) or a network of myPALs (myPAL-NET) that covers a larger area and can replace the large and expensive mooring systems. Finally, the system will be fully standardised to co-operate with existing observing mooring systems, compatible with EU data collection policies and international standard requirements. The primary objective of the feasibility study is to fully commercialize the technology behind the underwater passive aquatic recording system and to gain an understanding to the potential opportunities of this technology in the marine instrumentation and oceanographic market."
