Over the years, this school-meals programme in northern Burundi has managed to stabilise students’ attendance rates, offering them a better future. The region is particularly vulnerable to drought, and classrooms used to regularly become empty when families had to leave to find water and food. In this project, parents are involved in the school canteen despite their poverty. They do the work necessary to keep the canteen running so that their children can continue to attend school with a hot meal every day.
