The major earthworks components include 782,000m3 of bund fill material, 90,000m3 of rock armour, 367,000m3 of rock fill and 160,000m3 alluvium cover material.

Appointed under a collaborative design and construct contract, BGC is completing the flood protection bunds, relocation of 2.4km of overhead 33kV powerline and 1.7km of below ground 33kV powerline including testing, commissioning and updating of BHP electrical systems protection settings for BHP. The major earthworks components include 782,000m3 of bund fill material, 90,000m3 of rock armour, 367,000m3 of rock fill and 160,000m3 alluvium cover material. The flood protection bunds are designed to protect a section of 5km of operational mining boundary along the diverted 10M mega litre creek alignment which is being completed by BHPBIO. This will safe guard mining of ore below the existing creek and protect mining operations during the operational phase and future mine closure
During the design process BGC, together with design partner Golder, were able to offer cost savings to BHP through value engineering which led to the removal of the requirement to process all the material for the bund construction. The team further explored potential savings such as reducing the depth and width of the toe trench excavation, which may result in a reduction of the quantity of material to be removed and subsequently replaced with costly processed quarry rock. |
