PROJECT DETAILS
BGC Contracting have been engaged to deliver the earthworks, drainage, traffic management, flexible pavements, piling and bridgeworks consisting of 13km of roadway and 15 bridges. Section 4 is one of eleven sections of the upgrade of 155km of the existing Pacific Highway, NSW. BGC’s section consists of both Brownfield and Greenfield work and 950,000m3 of cut to fill over a “soft soil” floodplain, five highway twin bridges and five over-bridges.
The Brownfield scope involves a lateral shift of the highway and 2 major interchanges; Tyndale Interchange and Maclean Interchange, all being performed under high speed, live traffic conditions requiring complex traffic staging solutions which BGC have been assisting the Principal to develop without a requirement for significant redesign to the permanent works, whilst still targeting to meeting RMS’s completion dates.
The project starts about 6km north of Woolgoolga (north of Coffs Harbour) and ends approximately 6km south of Ballina. The scope of works includes:
950,000m3 of cut to fill earthworks in rock and clay sands, lot management, staged excavation and re-use of consolidating embankments for use within the formation. 90% of the earthworks scope is being self-performed by BGC 2 overpasses and 10 bridges ranging from B1 to B4 requiring both pored piles and driven tubular steel piles Installation of 35km of subsurface trench drains (typically type C6 herringbone) across the alignment Construction of 13km of dual carriage way, predominately concrete R1 pavements and flexible pavements, with foamed bitumen, asphalt and stabilised pavements Road finishing, landscaping and ancillaries
There are around 800 - 1,600 vehicles movements per day in this section, requiring the careful selection and implementation of traffic controls. The traffic management philosophy is to minimise disturbance to the local stakeholders and other users of the road while maintaining a safe work site. This has been achieved by the implementation of a detailed traffic management plan and related Traffic Control Plans, staging designs and surveillance activities. |
