The development objectives of Improving Water Service Access and Security in the Metropolitan Region of Sao Paulo Project of Brazil are to increase access of vulnerable people to water services and to contribute to the reduction of water losses and pollution loads in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo(MRSP). This project has four components. 1) The first component, Expand access to water services, reduce water losses, and increase system resilience in the MRSP, has four sub components as follows: (i) Increase access of the vulnerable population to Water Supply and Sanitation (WSS) services; (ii) Rehabilitation and renewal of critical water networks; (iii) Reducing water losses in specific water sectors in low-income areas; and (iv) Repairing and improving operation and maintenance of assets, lifespan extension of dams supplying water to the MRSP. 2) The second component, Reduce pollution loads to scarce water resources in the Guarapiranga Water Basin, has the following subcomponents: (i) Expanding sanitation services provision to vulnerable people; (ii) Reducing pollution loads in rivers; and (iii) Increase sewerage system reliability. 3) The third component, Technical assistance and Project management and supervision, has the following subcomponents: (i) Exploring innovative approaches, strategic studies, and alternative-pilot solutions; (ii) Project management and supervision; and (iii) Institutional support, development of studies, plans, designs, and investigations to support the renewing and life span extension of the dams supplying water to the MRSP. 4) The fourth component, Contingent Emergency Response Component, aims to support São Paulo State Water Utility (SABESP), following an eligible crisis or emergency, to respond to the emergency situations and reconstruction. |
