Project Detail |
Project Type: Highways & Bridges | Procurement Type: Design-Build
State: California | Status: Ongoing
The purpose of the project is to replace the aging bridge with a modern structure that conforms to all updated seismic codes while providing for a 100-year design life. In addition, the new bridge will provide for a minimum 200-foot clearance above the Port channel to accommodate the largest cargo ships, while increasing the vehicular capacity of the I-710 freeway.
The Cable-Stayed Bridge
The centerpiece of the project is the cable-stayed bridge that will stretch 1,000 feet between the two 500-foot tall pylons, with 500-foot long high approaches at each end. The pylon towers will be unique octagonal single tower structures that transform to a diamond shape at the top.
Approaches and Interchanges
The approaches to the new signature structure are designed as a single unit with the main span. The approach bridges are comprised of two independent concrete box girders with cantilever decks. Most of the approaches are constructed using the Moveable Scaffold System (MSS) method. The project also includes new interchanges between the I-710 freeway and Ocean Boulevard, Pico Avenue, and SR-47. A bike path will also be provided across the new bridge. |
