The urban transport network will be completed by two tramway systems constructed in the east and west suburbs of Thessaloniki. The project consists of a line approximately 9.6 km long (central section of the new line), which passes underground at the main road axes and central areas of the city. Part of the project also involves the construction of 13 stations, a depot for rolling stock together with a workshop for maintaining and repairing mechanical and electrical equipment, the supply of the rolling stock and the installations for line operations. The operational and control centre for the new line will also be built in the same area, together with the administrative offices of the Thessaloniki Metro company. The new line will be completely automated, with no operators, with a transportation capacity of 18,000 passengers per hour in each direction and a frequency of 90 seconds at peak times.
