The North Inter-American Highway is one of the two sections of the Pan-American Highway that crosses Costa Rica. This section of the Cañas-Liberia national highway is of great importance because it completes the Mesoamerican Corridor, fosters tourism and increases the countrys competitiveness in merchandise transport.
The project consists of increasing to four lanes, two in each direction, along 50.6 kilometres of this highway, with the works commencing at kilometre 166.3 and ending at 216.9.
The construction of eight bridges is also included and the rehabilitation of another eight. Each new bridge is constructed alongside the one to be rehabilitated.
The eight new bridges cross eight geographical features. Five of which are river courses, two are ravines and one is the crossing over an irrigation channel.
The new bridges are 12.60 metres wide, with two 3.65-metre wide lanes, 1.80 and 0.50-metre verges and a 1.5-metre pavement protected by a New Jersey type concrete balustrade for pedestrian safety. The lengths vary between 12 and 46 metres.
As part of the works dynamics, the priority is to construct them parallel to the existing ones, in order to immediately commence their rehabilitation.
The bridges to be rehabilitated will be adapted to the new section so that the concrete deck requires widening from 7.30 metres to 9.10 metres, in addition to the construction of a two-metre wide pedestrian footbridge on one side.
