Project Detail |
AFD is financing, alongside the EBRD and the IFC, three transport projects carried by the Izmir Municipality to facilitate access to the center and the development of outlying districts while reducing traffic congestion:
a modernization project for its maritime transport which has enabled the renewal of the citys passenger boat fleet with a new, more efficient, more economical and low-carbon one;
the construction of two tram lines along the bay, at Konak and Karsiyaka, which will replace a bus network that is too dense in the city center and contribute to the development of the bay;
a third project to support the acquisition of rolling stock to support the expansion of the metro network, thereby increasing the comfort at peak times and the attractiveness of public transport in Izmir. Objective: to satisfy additional demand estimated at more than 250 000 daily passengers by 2030.
IMPACTS
These projects enable the development of a low-carbon mode of transportation by reducing the environmental footprint of Turkish growth with a sustainable urban transport strategy. The objective: to increase the alternative offer in transport, to ensure an easy access to the shops and employment centers of the city center for the populations located on the periphery of the bay, to improve the quality of the public services and to reduce the traffic of vehicles and road risk while allowing the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Projects promote balanced development by integrating into a local public policy to control urban development and improve the quality of public services, and improve the mobility of the population, particularly those who are captive (low-income populations). income and / or lacking individual means of transport).
