The project aims to achieve a continuous water supply for the inhabitants of Pondicherry. The rehabilitation of water infrastructures and innovative technological solutions are at the heart of the project.
CONTEXT
Like many regions in India, Pondicherry is under water stress. Demographic and economic growth is putting significant pressure on available water resources. Climate change is also likely to increase this tension. Therefore, it is urgent to plan and implement sustainable water resources management.
The objective of the project is to contribute to improving the living conditions of the inhabitants of Pondicherry and its surroundings, by increasing the availability of drinking water and by rationalizing the distribution. It also aims to create a healthy and attractive environment to support the development of the city.
The Public Works Department of the Union Territory (PWD) will be responsible for implementing this policy in coordination with the Pondicherry Pollution Control Committee (PPCC).
The project is part of the support to the national AMRUT policy (Attal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation).
DESCRIPTIVE
In order to meet the demand for water by 2032 and to ensure a continuous supply, it is planned to drill 84 wells, to acquire submersible pumps, to install electrical transformers, to set up pumping and reservoirs, develop intermediate storage wells and pipes for the distribution network and develop grid attachments for the poorest inhabitants.
The project involves the acquisition of data collection and monitoring equipment (SCADA) for the operation of wells and the drinking water supply system. A computerized billing, collection and subscriber management system will be put in place.
AFD also provides the PWD with technical assistance to prepare the various studies necessary to define the sanitation plan for the areas of Pondicherry that are not integrated, the strengthening of technical capacities for efficient management of facilities and the providing the necessary management tools.

Establish a sustainable and modern operating and maintenance system, building PWD capabilities.
Improve the water quality and the efficiency of the network for the residents of Pondicherry.
