Project Name | Anaerobic digestion and heat generation at Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited, |
Project Detail | The project activity proposed by SCOUL consists in the implementation of a digester, a closed anaerobic reactor, with around 26-day retention time at the planned distillery unit. The digester will extract methane-rich biogas from the spent wash. It is designed to reduce the COD by about 70% (+/- 5%) and BOD by 90% (+/- 5%). Then spent wash will be received in a lamella clarifier where the active biomass will be separated and part of it recirculated back to the reactor. Sludge surplus from the digestion process will be used as manure for sugarcane fields. Treated wastewater coming out of the lamella clarifier will be used either for irrigation or as a moistening agent for the bio composting plant that SCOUL intend to build soon. Biogas will be combusted in a boiler that will supply a maximum of 5 tons per hour of steam at 10 bar to the distillery. A biogas flaring system will also be installed but used only in case of emergencies. |
