Project Detail |
In order to introduce peaceful atomic energy into the national energy mix and contribute to the provision of the sustainable national development requirements of the ambitious vision of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in accordance with local requirements and international obligations, making atomic energy part of the energy system in Saudi Arabia and enhancing the role of the Kingdom as a leading and effective country. In the field of energy, the Supreme Order No. 43309 dated 19/9/1438 AH, establishing the National Atomic Energy Project in the Kingdom and Headquarters, was issued by the Council of Ministers No. 649 dated 1/11/1438 AH, which aims to enter the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the peaceful nuclear field. The Kingdoms nuclear energy will provide the opportunity to develop a safe, efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly source and will also contribute to the countrys diversification strategy, ensuring a safe and sustainable energy future.
Components of the National Atomic Energy Project in the Kingdom:
The National Atomic Energy Project consists of several main components that are the result of extensive and comprehensive work and studies carried out by the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy
Component 1: Large nuclear reactors
These are reactors with an electric capacity of 1200-1600 megawatts of power capacity per reactor and which contribute to support the base load in the electrical grid throughout the year and contain:
1/1: Determining and setting up sites for the construction of the first atomic power station in the Kingdom and the processing of its infrastructure
1/2: Establishment of Nuclear Holding Company (NHC)
1/3: Study of Nuclear Reactor Techniques and Preliminary Technical Study of FEED Engineering Designs
Component 2: Localization of techniques and construction of small integrated nuclear reactors
Where these reactors enable the Kingdom to own and develop atomic energy technologies and build them in isolated places from the electrical grid to suit their requirements of desalination and various thermal applications of the petrochemical industries and contain:
2/1: High-temperature, gas-fired compact micro-reactors (HTGR)
2/2: Smart technology reactors
Component 3: Nuclear fuel cycle
Which represents the first step of the Kingdom in the path of self-sufficiency in the production of nuclear fuel, which will contribute to the rehabilitation of Saudi scientists specialized in the exploration and production of uranium and the use of experience gained in this project to develop the Kingdoms natural resources of uranium, which will provide employment and investment opportunities and also acquire new technology in the extraction and Uranium ore production. Which contains:
3/1: Training and development of human capacity and the localization of uranium oxide production techniques
3.2 Exploration and exploration program for uranium and thorium ore in the Kingdom
Component 4: Regulation and Control
With the assurance of the safety and security aspect, the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Authority has been developed and is in the process of being established to be an independent body in the Kingdom that aims to preserve the safety of atomic and radiation; individuals, the environment and nuclear facilities.
