The development objectives of Sindh Barrages Improvement Project for Pakistan are to improve the reliability and safety of the Guddu barrage and strengthen the Sindh Irrigation Department’s capacity to operate and manage the barrage. This project requires additional financing (AF) to scale up activities under the original project. New activities under the this AF will include (a) rehabilitation and modernization of Sukkur Barrage; (b) support for the integrated Operation and Maintenance (O and M) of the three barrages in Sindh Province; (c) critical studies to improve coordination and management of the three barrages; and (d) better management of the riverine habitats of the main Indus between Guddu and Sukkur Barrages. The project will have a closing date of June 30, 2024. The project components will be restructured as follows, including two new components. 1) The first component, Rehabilitation of Guddu and Sukkur Barrages, would support the rehabilitation of Sukkur Barrage as well as Guddu Barrage. 2) The second component, Improved Barrage Operation, aims to provide technical assistance and equipment support to facilitate the O and M of Guddu Barrage. 3) The third component, Technical Studies, aims to help deepen GoSindh’s technical understanding of barrages and prepare for Phase 2. 4) The fourth component, River Basin Water Resources and Riverine Management, aims to sharpen the focus on the water-related environmental and social issues in the 170-kilometers stretch of the Indus between Sukkur and Guddu Barrages, which also is a designated Ramsar site. 5) The fifth component, Project Management, Monitoring, and Evaluation, aims to support Sukkur Barrage rehabilitation.
