Project Detail |
In the regions of the inner Niger Delta, in central and northern Mali, rural populations are facing multifaceted structural crises including food insecurity. The SDC supports local authorities with economic projects in promising agricultural sectors to ensure food security and reduce poverty by at least 150,000 people. In addition, it assists the municipalities of this area in the project management of territorial development and the peaceful management of natural resources.
Food security and better living conditions for 150,000 Malians
In order to ensure food security and reduce poverty, the communities of the Youwarou, Tenenkou, Mopti and Niafunké zones carry out support projects for the promising agricultural sectors.
In spite of the agricultural, piscicultural and pastoral potential that the delta areas offer, they remain of low production. Their isolation, linked to the degradation and conflicts over natural resources, as well as the lack of infrastructure for production, processing and preservation of products, partly explain this low productivity. In addition, the countrys political and security crisis has weakened the resilience of communities in these areas of north-central Mali. In order to improve farmers incomes, Switzerland supports local authorities in the production of agricultural structures, processing units and road infrastructures.
More than 1,200 ha of managed land
Thanks to the developed areas, farmers will increase the area under cultivation and diversify food production. Elected officials and technical services will conduct studies on three promising sectors namely rice, fish and cattle-meat. Promotional activities - fairs, sales exhibitions and study tours - will also contribute to promoting local products. 600 entrepreneurs and producers will benefit from training in product processing and preservation techniques. Women and young people, constituting 50% of them, will be able to increase their income by at least 20%. The development of a dozen fish ponds and markets will contribute to the growth of fishing and breeding. The program also provides for the construction and maintenance of 150 km of marked trails.
Towards responsible management of natural resources
With a view to efficient use of infrastructure and peaceful management of natural resources, local authorities and user producers will sign local conventions. In the same vein, the technical services of the State and local elected officials will organize information campaigns on good practices in the field of environmental protection. The program will also promote community meetings around the local life. |
