Protecting Argentina’s Lujan River Basin from climate-related flooding.
Argentina’s Buenos Aires Province has experienced intense rainfalls and flooding that have adversely impacted the Lujan River Basin. These are caused by a combination of factors including climate factors leading to increased rainfall frequency and intensity, the physical characteristics of the river basin, and other factors linked to land-use, urbanization and road and water infrastructure.
The Lujan River Comprehensive Plan will address these problems. Structural adaptation measures such as increasing the conveyance capacity of the river, the construction of retention basins and the substitution of inflatable dams for lock gates will be combined with non-structural measures such as an early warning system, improved land-use management and institution strengthening. GCF’s financing will support the climate adaptation-related measures, while CAF and the Buenos Aires Province provide co-financing for the other non-climate measures. |
