Project Detail |
The objective of the project is the construction of a sludge treatment unit by anaerobic digestion (or anaerobic digestion) in the East Alexandria wastewater treatment plant. This unit will be built on an existing empty land with a surface area of ??12 feddans (approximately 50,400 m²) located in the station compound and will include a new tank for the thickening of sludge, digesters, gasometers as well as than a cogeneration unit. The purpose of this treatment unit is the reuse of the sludge produced by the station in order to generate electricity and income while contributing to: reducing the environmental impact of wastewater treatment, including in terms of against climate change by reducing emissions; contribute to the economic and financial balance of the sector in Alexandria; minimize nuisance for residents living near the station and the current dump. The Project Authority is the Construction Authority for Drinking Water and Sanitation (CAPW), a public executing agency under the Ministry of Housing, Public Infrastructure and Urban Communities.
IMPACTS
reduction of 30% to 35% of the quantity of sludge produced; electricity generation (from 110,000 to 160,000 kWh / day) thanks to the biogas produced by the treatment of sludge, allowing the station to reach electrical self-sufficiency by up to 60-70%; creating market opportunities for sludge produced through their sale as fertilizer to farmers. Such a unit would be the first in Egypt outside Cairo and could serve as a catalyst in encouraging the state to set up similar units across the country. |
