Project Detail |
The proposed project will (i) upgrade about 125 kilometers (km) of national highway in the northeastern region of Thailand from two-lane carriageway to four-lane carriageway; and (ii) strengthen capacity in road safety management by introducing road safety audits and road safety awareness training for the executing agency during project implementation.
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy
As the second largest economy in the Southeast Asia, Thailands development potential is strong. Over the last four decades, Thailand has made remarkable progress in social and economic development, moving from a low-income country to an upper-middle income economy. Thailands economy is diversified with manufacturing as the main sector contributing to economic growth. Transport infrastructure is an important component of the economy for mobility of goods and people to provide accesses to economic opportunities and social services.
The proposed project will improve National Highway (NH) 22 and NH 23, both of which are located in northeast Thailand and key link roads in the vicinity of the EWEC. On NH 22, the annual average daily traffic (AADT) is about 12,000. The AADT on NH 23 is about 15,000. To address such large traffic volumes, the government is currently upgrading NH 22 and NH 23 to divided 4-lane carriageways. The proposed project will continue the government initiative by upgrading the remaining sections of NH 22 and NH 23, which are currently single 2-lane carriageways. |
