The Punto EV project, located on the Casa Central Valparaíso Campus of the Federico Santa María Technical University, presents sustainable infrastructure that will allow up to six electric cars to be charged simultaneously, and is the start of a university-wide electromobility network in the region. The Federico Santa María Technical University (USM) has inaugurated what it claims is the first photovoltaic-powered electric vehicle charging station at a Latin American university campus on its Casa Central Campus in Valparaíso. According to a statement, the so-called EV Point features 32 solar panels and six electric chargers operating simultaneously, installed on a low-carbon laminated wood structure that includes a seating area with panoramic views. With a surface area of ??140 square meters, the infrastructure ensures that students, faculty, and staff can charge their vehicles during the academic day. The station is part of a plan to expand the network to other university campuses, such as San Joaquín, Vitacura, Viña del Mar, and Concepción. The report adds that the development of the Punto EV was the result of a collaboration between the university and various companies. Arauco provided the wood for the structure, Dhemax supplied the electric chargers, and Rhona provided the solar panels and electrical panels. Additionally, Nissan donated two electric vehicles for research, while BYD, Gildemeister, E-Auto, and Voltex offered exclusive benefits for staff members. In the academic field, Javier Robledo, from the USM Advanced Center for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (AC3E), explained that his team contributed to the design of the solar charging system and facilitated collaboration with industry to secure donations and resources that made the project possible. |
