Work Detail | The Australian Government has provided over K2 million worth of life saving medical goods and equipment to ANGAU Hospital in Lae in support of the work being undertaken to redevelop the hospital facilities. In addition to diagnostic and surgical equipment, an extensive inventory of specialist items such as operating theatre utensils, protective equipment and medical apparatus has been provided to ANGAU. Chief Executive Officer of ANGAU hospital, Dr Christopher Kenyhercz was pleased that the new medical goods and equipment will support improved service provision. “We are very grateful for Australia’s support to ANGAU. Two of our four operating theatres have been out of service for at least two years due to unserviceable equipment. These new medical goods and equipment will enable all four of ANGAU’s operating theatres to resume operations. This will ultimately save lives”. Australian High Commission Counsellor Christine Sturrock noted that the supply of this new medical equipment was part of a broader package of works being delivered at ANGAU with Australian support. “The provision of these essential medical supplies and equipment is important because it will have an immediate impact on the care provided to patients at ANGAU. This is very positive, and forms part of a larger package of works funded by the Australian Government that will help transform ANGAU’s ability to provide health services in Lae and the surrounding areas”. The first phase of redevelopment works to which Australia is contributing is well underway, and a range of other infrastructure upgrades are ongoing. These include the construction of a new operating theatre and ward, construction of a new dental clinic, and the redevelopment of facilities at the Lae School of Nursing. The Australian government is working in partnership with the PNG government to redevelop ANGAU hospital as part of its ongoing bilateral development cooperation program with Papua New Guinea. |
