Work Detail The Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) has taken delivery of a second high-speed support vessel (HSSV), RNOV Al Naasir (S12), from Austal.

The RNOV Al Naasir has been built under a $124.9m contract, awarded by RNO to Austal to design, build and provide logistics support for two HSSVs.

Austal has recently delivered the first HSSV RNOV Al Mubshir to the RNO, which is now deployed in the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea.

Austal CEO David Singleton said: “This second HSSV reinforces Austal’s position as the Australian shipbuilder and defence prime contractor of choice, developing and delivering customised solutions based on proven design platforms to naval fleets around the world.

“As we gear up for the 19-vessel, 40m Pacific Patrol Boat Replacement programme at the Henderson shipyard, we continue construction on two 58m Cape Class Patrol Boats for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) on schedule for delivery in the first half of 2017.”

The 72m-long RNOV Al Naasir features a vehicle deck measuring 900m², which is equipped to accommodate 260 embarked troops, and can operate at a speed of 38k.

Featuring an all-aluminium structure, the vessel is built based on Austal's 103m-long expeditionary fast transport (EPF) vessel, developed for the US Navy.

It has been designed to deliver a multiple-mission capability and operational flexibility.

RNOV Al Naasir can be deployed to conduct a range of naval missions such as helicopter operations, rapid deployment of military personnel and cargo, humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and search-and-rescue operations.
