Work Detail E.ON has begun construction of a large ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) system at the Westfleisch facility in Oer-Erkenschwick. The project is expected to generate more than 4,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity annually. The solar plant will have a peak capacity of 4.33 megawatts (MWp) and is designed to supply green electricity entirely for on-site consumption. This will help Westfleisch reduce its carbon emissions by around 1,700 tons each year. In total, E.ON will install more than 7,000 solar panels and ten inverters across an area of approximately 38,000 square meters—equivalent to over five football fields. Johannes Birzele at E.ON Business Solutions Germany, said: “This system shows how industrial companies can increase their independence through specifically tailored energy solutions. We support our customers in making an active contribution to the energy transition and achieving their sustainability goals.” Over the lifetime of the project, Westfleisch is expected to cut electricity costs significantly and avoid up to 30,000 tons of CO2 emissions. The head of the Westfleisch site, Bernhard Kotthoff, added: “The Westfleisch Group produces in Germany at over ten locations. The special feature of the plant in Oer-Erkenschwick will be that the green electricity generated here will be consumed exclusively on-site. This will enable us to compensate for future fluctuations in energy prices. This system also brings a clear added value to the immediate surroundings here in Oer-Erkenschwick – for the local environment, economic development, and the common goal of making our region more sustainable.” The groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of a long-term energy partnership between E.ON and Westfleisch, focused on sustainable power solutions and operational efficiency.
