Work Detail Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi, launched the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India (GHCI) during a national workshop organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) on 29th April 2025 in New Delhi. The one-day workshop was focused on exploring the opportunities for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the green hydrogen supply chain. The event saw the participation of over 300 delegates, including MSMEs, policymakers, technology providers, industry bodies, and international organizations. In his inaugural speech, Shri Pralhad Joshi underlined the government’s firm commitment to driving innovation in the renewable energy sector and highlighted the critical role MSMEs can play in India’s green hydrogen journey. He said that MSMEs would become the backbone of India’s green energy transition by offering innovative and localized solutions. He further stated that this move aligns with India’s target of becoming self-reliant in green hydrogen production by the year 2030. The launch of the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme (GHCI) marks a major step in ensuring transparency, credibility, and traceability in the production and trade of green hydrogen in the country. The Minister emphasized that the certification scheme would boost investor confidence and set a strong foundation for the sector. MNRE Secretary Shri Santosh Kumar Sarangi also addressed the gathering and spoke about the progress made under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. He highlighted the need to build technical capacities, create financing options, and strengthen technology partnerships to enable MSMEs to play a meaningful role in the green hydrogen ecosystem. He reassured the gathering of the ministry’s full support in building the required infrastructure and institutions. The workshop featured four technical sessions focusing on key areas: In the first session on “Technology Collaboration for MSMEs”, panelists discussed models for R&D partnerships and the importance of localizing key components like bipolar plates and electrolyzers. The involvement of academic and research institutions was seen as vital. The second session on “Business Opportunities in the Green Hydrogen Supply Chain” discussed how MSMEs could be integrated into large-scale green hydrogen projects. Experts from international organizations and private firms highlighted various business models and urged strategic planning to include MSMEs in the supply chain. The third session focused on “Decentralized Hydrogen Production through Biomass”. Speakers presented successful examples of converting biomass into hydrogen using thermochemical and biochemical methods, especially useful for rural areas. They also spoke about how this model could support local demand and promote a circular economy. The final session on “Catalyzing Investments” brought together representatives from financial institutions like the World Bank, IREDA, KfW, and IIFCL. They discussed risk mitigation, green credit lines, and financial solutions tailored for MSMEs to attract investments into the sector. The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to make India a global hub for the production, usage, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. By 2030, the mission is expected to help build 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen capacity annually, add 125 GW of renewable energy, generate over 6 lakh jobs, attract more than ?8 lakh crore in investments, reduce fossil fuel imports worth ?1 lakh crore, and cut down about 50 million metric tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year.
