Work Detail On 9th April 2025, Nigeria took a bold step towards solving its long-running power supply problems by signing a $328.8 million electricity transmission deal with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC). The contract, signed under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), will strengthen the country’s power infrastructure and expand the national grid capacity by 7,140 megawatts (MW). Project factsheet Contract worth: $328.8 million Signed with: China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) Part of: Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) Date signed: 9 April 2025 Scope: Over 544km of 330kV and 132kV transmission lines Grid capacity boost: 7,140MW Support from Siemens Energy: 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations Deployment areas: Okene, Amukpe, Potiskum, Apo Speaking at the signing in Abuja, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu called the Nigeria electricity transmission deal a major milestone. He explained that the project would accelerate the rehabilitation and construction of key transmission lines across the country. CMEC will lay more than 544km of 330kV and 132kV transmission lines, improving power delivery to homes, businesses, and industries. The Minister pointed out that the project aims to resolve long-standing grid bottlenecks, which have hindered efficient power distribution. Siemens partnership boosts Nigeria electricity transmission deal The agreement follows Siemens Energy’s recent delivery of 10 high-capacity transformers and 10 mobile substations to Nigeria. Those assets have already added over 700MW to the grid and are being deployed in locations such as Potiskum, Okene, Amukpe, and Apo. Adelabu highlighted that CMEC and Siemens are collaborating to modernise Nigeria’s ageing power infrastructure. Their goal is to reduce stranded power and improve access for millions. He added that the upgrades will boost industry, create jobs, and drive economic growth. Ultimately, the Nigeria electricity transmission deal is not just about infrastructure; it’s about powering homes and transforming lives.
