The contract was signed through its e-STORAGE division with Colbún for the project located in the Atacama region. Construction will begin in June 2025, and the system will be operational by the end of 2026. Canadian Solar Inc., through its subsidiary e-STORAGE, has announced the signing of a contract with Colbún, one of Chiles leading electricity generators, to supply a 228 MW, 912 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) for the Diego de Almagro Sur project in the Atacama region. In a statement, it explains that the system will use SolBank 3.0 technology, based on lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, active battery management, and an advanced liquid cooling system to maximize performance and safety. Construction of the system is scheduled to begin in June 2025 and is expected to generate up to 150 jobs during its peak operating phase, with commercial operations expected to begin in December 2026. The storage system will be installed next to the 232 MW Diego de Almagro Sur solar farm, which Colbún has been operating since 2022 and which already has an 8 MW/32 MWh storage system . With the new infrastructure, the storage capacity will cover the equivalent electricity consumption of 55,480 homes and improve the management of solar intermittency in the region. The Diego de Almagro Sur BESS will not only provide energy storage and movement capacity, but will also offer advanced grid services such as grid formation, black start, and inertia support—functions essential for the stable operation of the Chilean electricity system and the integration of more renewable energy into the national grid, the report adds. The agreement includes the provision of a comprehensive solution by e-STORAGE, encompassing local project management, commissioning services, and long-term maintenance. |
