A new rail maintenance hub planned for Ormeau, in Queensland, Australia, will support hundreds of jobs and play a crucial role in servicing the state’s growing train fleet, as the Crisafulli Government pushes forward with its public transport agenda. Gold Coast construction firm ADCO has been awarded a AUD 120 million (USD 76 million) contract to deliver the state-of-the-art facility, which will support over 100 jobs during construction and create around 140 ongoing roles once operational. The 20,000-square-metre building will maintain trains manufactured in Maryborough under the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP). The project is part of the state’s long-term plan to bolster transport capacity ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond, ensuring South East Queensland’s rail network keeps pace with population and visitor growth. Minister for Manufacturing Dale Last said the investment was vital for the state’s future. “The Crisafulli Government is delivering the support and new opportunities Queensland’s manufacturing sector has been calling for,” Minister Last said. “We’re making sure our network is ready to handle future demand, including athletes and visitors arriving for Brisbane 2032. This purpose-built facility will be key to maintaining the new trains being built right here in Queensland.” The QTMP aims to manufacture 65 six-car passenger trains locally, supporting regional jobs and ensuring vital skills are retained within the state. While the program has faced challenges in the past—including a AUD 2.4 billion (USD 1.5 billion) cost blowout under the previous government—the current administration is committed to restoring its integrity and delivering long-term value. Member for Coomera Michael Crandon welcomed the development as a win for the local community. “This project is creating meaningful job opportunities on the Gold Coast, including apprenticeships and cadetships that will help shape the next generation of tradespeople,” he said. “It’s great to see a local company like ADCO leading the build. Projects like these strengthen our economy and our workforce.” Earthworks are currently underway at the Ormeau site, with building construction due to commence later in 2025. The facility will form part of the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program, which is focused on growing local rail capacity and manufacturing expertise. The QTMP is headquartered near Maryborough, where the new trains are being produced to serve the South East Queensland rail network. |
