Work Detail Danish toymaker Lego has officially opened a new $1 billion manufacturing facility in Vietnam, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and clean energy. Located in Binh Duong province near Ho Chi Minh City, the state-of-the-art factory is Lego’s sixth globally and second in Asia, strategically positioned to serve the rapidly expanding Southeast Asian market. The new factory spans an area equivalent to 62 soccer fields and is designed with high energy efficiency and sustainability at its core. Lego aims for the facility to operate entirely on clean energy by 2026, in line with its broader climate goals. Speaking at the launch, Lego CEO Niels Christiansen highlighted the company’s long-term environmental strategy. “We are building this factory with the future in mind — for children and the planet. Our target is to stop adding greenhouse gases by 2050, with a near-term goal to cut emissions by 37% by 2032,” he said. The facility integrates 12,400 solar panels and a dedicated energy storage system to minimize carbon emissions and ensure a stable supply of renewable power. Lego has signed a direct power purchase agreement (DPPA) with clean energy producers, enabling the direct procurement of solar and wind energy to run the factory. The investment not only supports Lego’s environmental objectives but also contributes to Vietnam’s national climate ambition of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The facility is expected to employ thousands of skilled workers, many of whom will receive training from Lego’s other global production sites. Lego is also advancing its search for sustainable alternatives to oil-based plastics for its iconic bricks. While the transition is ongoing, the company continues to prioritize renewable energy initiatives and sustainable production models. “This facility reflects what sustainable manufacturing can look like in the future — a combination of innovation, responsibility, and local impact,” Christiansen added. As Lego accelerates its green transformation, the Vietnam factory stands as a key milestone, offering a replicable model for global manufacturers seeking to align profitability with sustainability.
