Work Detail |
Infraestruturas de Portugal reopened a section of the Beira Alta Line between Mangualde and Celorico da Beira on April 6, 2025, re-establishing the passenger transport service between Mangualde and Vilar Formoso. The restoration of rail traffic on this section will provide higher levels of quality, comfort, and safety for passengers using the rail service. Modernisation works on the Mangualde – Celorico da Beira section were completed in the first quarter of this year, and the reopening was contingent on a series of technical inspections and the subsequent issuance of the required certificates of conformity in line with national railway regulations. These certificates are essential whenever a new line enters service or after major interventions, as is the case with the ongoing extensive modernisation of the Beira Alta Line. This project represents a significant investment in the promotion of rail transport, offering users a more modern, reliable, safe, and environmentally sustainable infrastructure. The contract for the modernisation of the section of the Beira Alta Line, between Mangualde and Celorico da Beira, included works on the tracks and systems, earthworks and drainage, special engineering for bridges and viaducts, overpasses and underpasses, as well as the modernisation of the existing stations and stops. The fixed electric traction installations and basic infrastructure for signalling and telecommunications were also modernised. This intervention enabled the complete replacement of the track superstructure, using multipurpose concrete monoblock sleepers and 60 E1 rail, as well as changes to the layout of the Gouveia and Fornos de Algodres stations. These adjustments ensure that 750-metre-long trains can pass through and optimise operational conditions. As with the other sections already in service, the full opening of the line to Pampilhosa, including the new connection to the North Line, will be possible after completing the necessary inspections and issuing the required certificates of conformity, in line with national railway regulations. In the meantime, alternative road transport options will continue to be provided for CP customers. The modernisation of the Beira Alta Line on the Pampilhosa – Vilar Formoso section was approved under the Connecting Europe Facility, with a co-financing rate of 85%. |
