The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has commenced the rehabilitation and improvement of a national road that connects the municipalities of Bangued and Tayum in the province of Abra. The ongoing P77.2-million project is being implemented along the 6.69-kilometer portion of Abra-Kalinga Road covering Barangays Zone V, Zone VII, Patucannay, Macray, Poblacion, Deet, and Gaddani in Bagued and Tayum. The project that started civil works in February 2025 involves removing damaged pavement, compacting the subgrade, and applying full asphalt overlay throughout the entire stretch to restore the road’s durability. It also includes drainage to prevent flooding, and installation of safety signages and markings. According to a report submitted to Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan by DPWH-CAR Director Khadaffy D. Tanggol, the rehabilitation of Abra-Kalinga Road was necessary due to numerous potholes, cracks, and uneven surfaces that posed safety risks and increased travel time. This initiative is a crucial step in ensuring that residents and businesses in Abra benefit from a well-maintained and safer road network, ultimately enhancing transportation efficiency and promoting economic growth, Director Tanggol said. The rehabilitation of the Abra-Kalinga Road aligns with the vision of President Bongbong Marcos Jr.s ‘Bagong Pilipinas’ program, which emphasizes the importance of infrastructure development in promoting economic growth, improving mobility, and ensuring the safety and well-being of Filipino communities. Implemented by the Abra District Engineering Office under the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA), the project is expected to facilitate trade, encourage business activities, and support regional development while enabling government agencies and emergency responders to provide faster services. |
