PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP PLK) has signed a contract for the design of the Northern Masovia Railway, which will ensure faster, more convenient, and more efficient journeys to Warsaw, enhancing the connectivity of the region. This new project is expected to not only reduce travel times but also improve the overall quality of rail transport in the area, making it a vital addition to the local infrastructure. The contract was signed with the joint venture of Mosty Katowice and Arcadis and covers the Zegrze – Przasnysz railway line, which is part of the government’s Kolej Plus programme. “The signed agreement for the new railway line project is a step that brings us closer to the implementation of this important investment for the region,” said Minister Jan Grabiec, Head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. The value of the contract is PLN 32.5 million (EUR 7.6 million), and the contractor has a period of 52 months (over four years) to prepare the necessary design documentation and obtain all essential permits, including environmental and construction approvals. This timeline is critical for ensuring that the project proceeds smoothly, with all legal and technical aspects taken into account. The railway line between Zegrze Poludniowe and Przasnysz will primarily be a single-track, electrified line, designed to accommodate the growing demand for efficient and sustainable transport options. The use of double-track sections, which will be created as long passing loops, will allow trains to pass each other without waiting for a train from the opposite direction. This feature will significantly improve train flow and reduce delays, thus enhancing the overall experience for commuters. “Signing the agreement for the new Zegrze – Przasnysz railway line project is a key step in the development of railway infrastructure in Northern Masovia, which will contribute to a significant improvement in transport accessibility and travel comfort for residents,” said Piotr Malepszak, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure. Construction work for the new 73 km line is expected to begin in 2030 and be completed in 2033, depending on securing funding for construction, as current financing only covers the design stage. The new rail line will allow trains to run at a maximum speed of 160 km/h, with a journey time of approximately 50 minutes between Zegrze and Przasnysz. The transport operator has declared that at least 14 trains per day will run between Przasnysz and Warsaw, for a period of 5 years from the completion of the investment. The Northern Masovia Railway will connect Przasnysz, Maków Mazowiecki, Pultusk, and Serock with Zegrze. There will be 12 stops on the route, including Serock, Pultusk, Maków Mazowiecki, Przasnysz, Jadwisin, Wierzbica, Trzepowo, Lubienica Superunki, Jezewo, Kleszewo, Szlasy Bure, and a stop in the Szelków commune. All platforms will be adapted to the needs of people with limited mobility and will be equipped with shelters, benches, information boards, and lighting. “Thanks to this investment, residents of Przasnysz, Maków Mazowiecki, Pultusk, and Serock will gain quick and convenient access to the capital. Our goal is to create a modern and efficient railway network that will serve society for many years,” said Piotr Wyborski, CEO of Polskie Linie Kolejowe. In 2022, PLK signed an agreement for the development of this line. Four projects have been approved for implementation in the Mazovian province under the Kolej Plus programme. In addition to preparing design documentation for the construction of the Zegrze – Przasnysz railway line (the so-called Northern Masovian Railway), the revitalisation of the Sokolów Podlaski – Siedlce and Ostrów Mazowiecka – Malkinia railways are also planned. Residents of Kozienice and the surrounding areas will also gain better access to the railway. The Kolej Plus programme is scheduled for implementation by 2029 and aims to improve rail connections and services across Poland, ensuring that underserved areas receive better access to major cities, which is expected to drive both regional development and sustainable transport growth. Its completion will improve the living conditions of residents and increase the attractiveness of many regions. The programme, which is carried out under the auspices of the Ministry of Infrastructure, is worth approximately PLN 13.3 billion (EUR 3 billion), including PLN 11.2 billion (EUR 2.6 billion) from the state budget and approximately PLN 2 billion (EUR 467 million) from local authorities. The programme will help eliminate communication exclusion by providing better access to railways and improved journey times. |
