This was confirmed by the Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, at an energy forum. He also said that there will be a renewable energy tender this year. Minister of Energy and Mines Joel Santos announced the goal of reaching 300 MW of operational battery storage systems by 2027 during his speech at an energy forum focused on the Caribbean region. In his speech, Santos emphasized that one of the key steps this year will be the launch of a renewable energy tender, in collaboration with the National Energy Commission (CNE). He stated that the government is currently working on preparing the terms and conditions for this call, with the aim of encouraging investment and the development of innovative projects in the energy sector. Among the related regulatory provisions is Resolution CNE-AD-0005-2024, issued by the National Electricity Commission (CNE), which establishes that renewable energy projects with installed capacities equal to or greater than 20 MWac must include battery storage systems. These systems must have a capacity equivalent to at least 50% of their installed capacity and guarantee a minimum runtime of four hours. At the same event, CNE Executive Director Edward Veras reported that more than 20 storage projects have already been awarded. Regarding tenders, Veras pointed out that by law they can only be used for energy purchases, not for infrastructure construction. He added that definitive concessions are only granted once the land for its location has been secured, environmental permits have been issued, and interconnection points have been located. Last year, the Dominican Republic added 275 MW of nominal capacity, and an additional 78 MWp under the Net Metering Program. According to the recent Renewable Capacity Statistics 2025 report , presented a few weeks ago by the International Energy Agency (IRENA), the country has 1,423 MW of installed photovoltaic capacity. |
