Work Detail Preparations for transitioning the “Bayerwald” rail network to battery-powered trains are progressing, with the Free State of Bavaria commissioning DB InfraGO AG to plan the necessary infrastructure upgrades within the DB network. Bavaria will invest EUR 5 million. At the contract signing, Bavaria’s Transport Minister, Christian Bernreiter, stated: “We are making an advance financial investment so that all routes in the Bayerwald network can be converted to battery-powered trains. This is how climate-friendly mobility works in rural areas. With the signing of the contract, we are significantly closer to our goal of using only emission-free vehicles throughout Bavaria by 2040.” The introduction of battery-powered trains will require infrastructure improvements across the Bayerwald network. Currently, only Plattling station is equipped with overhead lines. The newly signed contract covers planning for additional charging facilities along the DB InfraGO AG-operated routes. Planned measures include: Electrification of a 5-kilometre section between Bettmannsäge and Zwiesel, including station tracks in Zwiesel. Electrification of Bayerisch Eisenstein station, in line with planned electrification on the Czech side from Klatovy to Bayerisch Eisenstein. Construction of a charging station in Grafenau. Development of a railway power supply system, connected to the Bayernwerk AG energy network. In addition, the Free State of Bavaria commissioned the rail operator Länderbahn in November 2024 to plan a charging station in Viechtach for the Gotteszell–Viechtach line. Federal funding is being sought under the Municipal Transport Financing Act (GVFG) for all planned infrastructure upgrades. Setting a precedent for sustainable rail transport Heiko Büttner, DB Group Representative for the Free State of Bavaria, highlighted the significance of the initiative: “I am delighted that we are signing the first DB planning contract for a battery network in Bavaria here in the Bavarian Forest. Together, we are setting a precedent for innovative mobility in the Free State. Emission-free hybrid battery trains and the appropriate rail infrastructure with charging stations and overhead line islands will ensure that local rail transport in rural areas becomes even more reliable, environmentally friendly, and attractive.” The Free State of Bavaria aims to eliminate diesel-powered trains from local rail passenger transport by 2040. A 2023 study by the Technical University of Dresden, commissioned by the Free State, concluded that battery-powered trains are the most cost-effective alternative for the Bavarian Forest network. They require significantly less infrastructure expansion than full electrification and are more economical than hydrogen-powered trains. Battery-powered trains will operate by charging via overhead lines along electrified sections and running on battery power along non-electrified routes. Bayerwald: Planned implementation and routes The transition to battery-powered trains is scheduled for December 2034, coinciding with the expiry of the current diesel train operations contract. The following routes will be converted: RB 35 Plattling – Bayerisch Eisenstein Charging locations: Plattling, Bettmannsäge–Zwiesel section, Bayerisch Eisenstein. RB 36 Zwiesel – Grafenau Charging locations: Zwiesel, Grafenau. RB 37 Zwiesel – Bodenmais Charging location: Zwiesel. RB 38 Gotteszell – Viechtach Charging location: Viechtach. Discussions are also ongoing with Czech authorities to explore the possibility of introducing direct services between Plattling and Klatovy in the future.
