Work Detail Train testing has commenced on Sydney’s newly converted Southwest Metro line following extensive work to upgrade the 130-year-old former T3 Bankstown line to modern metro standards. A significant milestone was reached at 4:00am on 3rd April 2025, when train set TS 28 completed its inaugural 6.5-kilometre journey to Campsie Station in five hours. Once the extended metro line opens next year, the same journey is expected to take just 11 minutes. This marks the beginning of a rigorous testing and commissioning programme, which will involve more than 6,500 hours of train testing between Sydenham and Bankstown. During the initial test run, the train was operated under manual control at a cautious speed of five kilometres per hour, with an operator and a team of rolling stock engineers on board to monitor progress. Southwest Metro line tests The first phase of testing will see the train travel at speeds below 25km/h, with an operator and pilot in control. This phase includes a series of key tests, such as: Car-Car Clearance Test – ensuring all curves and turns can be navigated safely; Kinematic Envelope Testing – verifying safe clearance between the train and station platforms; Platform screen door interface checks; Mechanical gap filler tests; Communications tests, including radio and static systems checks; and Loaded train testing, where water containers simulate the weight of a fully occupied train. Subsequent phases will involve testing at higher speeds and a transition from manual to automated train operations. Passengers on the M1 North West & Bankstown Line are advised to expect increased disruption during the testing period. Full or partial line closures will be necessary at times, with some evening services ceasing at 10pm. Commuters are encouraged to check transport apps for updates before travelling. Authorities have apologised for any inconvenience caused and expressed appreciation for passengers’ patience as the testing programme progresses.
