Work Detail Origami Solar, the leading U.S. provider of domestic steel solar module frames, is expanding its product line in response to customer feedback and the increasing demand for stronger, more reliable solar panel support structures. As the industry transitions toward steel frames as the preferred choice, Origami Solar is introducing new frame options to enhance the value and performance of steel across all segments of the solar industry. This expansion aligns with the industry’s need for more durable solutions, particularly as solar modules become increasingly fragile. Origami Solar’s steel frames are engineered for superior strength and undergo rigorous testing to ensure high performance. These frames offer increased resistance to wind and snow loads, significantly exceeding industry standards while providing a safer and more cost-effective alternative to imported aluminum frames. Additionally, Origami’s U.S.-based manufacturing and supply chain allow for rapid domestic delivery within one to two days, eliminating the risks and delays associated with overseas suppliers. As the only company solely focused on high-value steel frame solutions, Origami Solar is leading the shift toward American-made alternatives that provide enhanced durability and reliability. These frames are particularly well-suited for larger photovoltaic (PV) module sizes and offer increased resilience against extreme weather conditions. The company’s continued innovation is backed by four years of expertise in frame design, extensive internal testing, and Finite-Element Analysis (FEA). Furthermore, Origami’s frame designs have been validated through top-tier third-party test laboratories, ensuring they meet the highest quality standards. Origami Solar’s latest product expansions include new frame options designed to optimize cost, weight, and performance while maintaining high domestic content. These frames are also eligible for the IRS Domestic Content Bonus, providing additional financial benefits for manufacturers and developers. The newly introduced products include a lighter-weight 30mm frame tailored for utility and commercial applications, available in both glass/glass and glass/foil configurations. Additionally, a flangeless short-side frame is now offered in 30mm and 35mm profiles, reducing costs while maintaining structural integrity. For residential solar projects, Origami has developed specialized frames in multiple profiles, ensuring optimal module performance and allowing customers to maximize incentives under the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) Bonus program. Gregg Patterson, CEO of Origami Solar, said in a statement, “We started this journey of innovation with a goal of transitioning the solar industry from imported extruded aluminum to domestically produced steel. Customer response has been overwhelmingly positive. Manufacturers, developers, and other solar stakeholders are receptive to the material transition and excited about our 35mm frame’s demonstrated performance.” He further added, “With a singular focus on continuing to deliver value to our module manufacturing customers and their customers, we’ve built a world-class team, invested in advanced design and testing capabilities, and forged strong industry partnerships to design, prototype, and manufacture a broad portfolio of solutions that unlocks an industry-wide shift to steel solar module frames.” With approximately 50 gigawatts of solar power added in the U.S. in 2024, according to research firm Wood Mackenzie, the demand for high-performance, domestically produced solar components continues to grow. Origami Solar’s expanded product line reinforces its commitment to delivering reliable, cost-effective steel frames that support the rapid expansion of the U.S. solar industry. By providing a fully U.S.-based supply chain and innovative frame designs, Origami Solar is helping manufacturers and developers meet the evolving needs of the renewable energy market while strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities.
