Rajasthan Part I Power Transmission Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Energy Solutions Ltd, has awarded a significant contract to a consortium comprising Hitachi Energy India Limited and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). This contract involves the design and delivery of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) terminals, which will facilitate the transmission of renewable energy from the Bhadla region in Rajasthan to Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh, an important industrial and transportation hub. The HVDC link spans 950 kilometers and has a transmission capacity of 6,000 megawatts (MW), sufficient to power approximately 60 million households across India. The project is a key part of India’s strategy to expand its renewable energy infrastructure and forms a crucial segment of the country’s 500 GW renewable energy evacuation and interstate transmission system. The 6,000 MW, ±800 kilovolt (kV) bi-pole and bi-directional HVDC terminals are included in the Phase-III Part I transmission system, which was awarded to AESL through a tariff-based competitive bidding process. A robust HVDC system is essential for ensuring the controlled bi-directional flow of power, maintaining grid stability, and effectively integrating renewable energy into India’s power network. As part of the project, Hitachi Energy India and its consortium partner BHEL will provide key components, including converter transformers, AC/DC control and protection systems, thyristor valves, 765 kV/400 kV grid connections, and various auxiliary systems. The contract follows the Letter of Intent issued on February 8, 2025, by Rajasthan Part I Power Transmission Limited to the consortium. This development marks a critical step in India’s renewable energy journey, as efficient power transmission is vital for sustaining economic growth and meeting increasing electricity demand. With India projected to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2030, energy demand is expected to rise significantly. In anticipation of this growth, Hitachi Energy has been expanding its manufacturing capabilities and investing in localized technology to meet the country’s evolving energy needs. The company recently raised INR 2,520.82 crores through Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP), with funds allocated for capacity expansion, working capital, and large-scale projects such as HVDC transmission systems. These efforts align with Hitachi Energy’s commitment to maintaining leadership in key sectors, including transformers, switchgear, power transmission systems, power quality solutions, and grid automation, all of which are crucial for India’s energy transition. It enables long-distance transmission of clean energy in a cost-effective and efficient manner while ensuring grid reliability and stability. The ability of HVDC technology to facilitate two-way power flow significantly enhances the responsiveness and strength of the grid, supporting India’s strategic ambition of increasing renewable energy penetration. This year marks the 70th anniversary of HVDC technology, pioneered by Hitachi Energy globally. Over the decades, the company has successfully integrated more than 150 GW of HVDC links into power systems worldwide, reinforcing its expertise in this critical technology. This project represents a major milestone in strengthening India’s power infrastructure and accelerating the country’s transition to renewable energy. By deploying advanced HVDC systems, the initiative will contribute to a more resilient and sustainable energy network, ensuring reliable electricity supply for millions of people while supporting India’s long-term clean energy goals. |
