Work Detail A new interlocking brick system is revolutionizing construction, allowing walls to be built without cement and reducing costs by up to 40%. This technology, inspired by the classic Lego game, offers a faster, more economical, and more sustainable alternative for building. The system is based on pieces that fit together without the need for traditional adhesives. One of the most innovative models is Linko, created by Australian student Keagan Howell of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). This method uses recycled plastic staples inserted into the masonry bricks to join them securely and stably, allowing the materials to be reused and contributing to a reduction in environmental impact. In addition to being an environmentally friendly solution, this type of construction significantly speeds up construction times. It is estimated that constructing structures using this system can reduce the time required to complete a building by up to 40% compared to conventional methods. Furthermore, by eliminating the use of cement, CO2 emissions from the construction industry, which currently accounts for around 8% of global emissions, are reduced. Another notable variant is Facadeclick, developed in Belgium and the Netherlands. This system uses high-density polyethylene (HDPE) connectors that allow the bricks to be assembled dry. Once laid, each row is reinforced with safety bolts, and insulating foam is injected into the wall, improving thermal and acoustic insulation. Thanks to these features, the technology has been recognized by various environmental initiatives for its contribution to reducing construction waste. In addition to their positive environmental impact, these systems offer a viable solution to the housing crisis. Because they are quick and reusable, they are an efficient alternative in both developed countries and low-income regions. The use of recycled plastics in these bricks also boosts the circular economy, giving new life to materials that would otherwise be waste. With the growing demand for sustainable and efficient construction methods, interlocking bricks are emerging as one of the most promising innovations in the industry. Their ability to optimize costs and time, while reducing environmental impact, makes them an attractive alternative for the future of construction.
