Work Detail Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), in partnership with Hitachi Energy India Limited, has signed a contract with Rajasthan Part I Power Transmission Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL), to design and execute a 6,000 MW, ±800 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission project. The project will transmit renewable energy from Bhadla, Rajasthan, to the industrial and transport hub in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh. Expected to be operational by 2029, the HVDC link will play a crucial role in Indias target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The advanced HVDC system will enable bi-directional power flow and enhance grid stability, aligning with India’s rapid renewable energy transition. This project further strengthens BHEL’s commitment to the Make in India initiative. This marks the fourth Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) transmission project awarded to BHEL. The company has previously executed the North-East Agra and Raigarh-Pugalur 800 kV, 6,000 MW HVDC links and is currently working on the Khavda-Nagpur HVDC link in collaboration with Hitachi Energy India. For the Bhadla-Fatehpur project, BHEL will manufacture key components, including converter transformers, shunt reactors, and thyristor valves, at its Bhopal and Bengaluru facilities. These components will facilitate the conversion of AC power at Bhadla into DC for transmission over 950 km, before reconverting it back to AC at Fatehpur. Additionally, BHEL’s Transmission Business Group will oversee the design and installation of the 765 kV/400 kV power evacuation system at Fatehpur and the 400 kV AC substation at Bhadla. BHEL has been at the forefront of Indias HVDC projects, contributing to major transmission links such as Rihand-Dadri, Chandrapur-Padghe, Ballia-Bhiwadi, and North-East Agra. As a leader in power generation and transmission, BHEL continues to deliver turnkey solutions for EHV substations, HVDC converter stations, and advanced grid technologies.
