Work Detail Aeon Mall Ha Dong, one of Vietnam’s largest shopping malls, has been actively implementing energy efficiency initiatives to optimize costs and promote sustainability. Opened in December 2019, the mall spans 9.5 hectares and houses 200 retail stores, attracting approximately 12 to 15 million visitors annually. Energy Consumption and Efficiency Measures According to Mr. Suzuki Atsuyuki, General Manager of Aeon Mall Ha Dong, the mall consumes 2.7 million kWh/month in summer and 2.0 million kWh/month in winter. To address rising energy costs and environmental concerns, the mall has adopted a range of energy-saving strategies, including investments in modern technology and enhanced operational management. “In the current context of climate change and increasing energy resource scarcity, energy efficiency and conservation have become a key factor in Aeon Mall Ha Dong’s development strategy. Additionally, it helps the shopping mall maintain stable operations and minimize the impact of rising energy costs,” said Mr. Suzuki Atsuyuki. Key Energy-Saving Initiatives Aeon Mall Ha Dong has introduced several measures to reduce electricity consumption: LED Lighting System: The mall predominantly utilizes LED lighting, with motion sensors installed in internal areas to minimize unnecessary energy use. Air Handling Unit (AHU) Optimization: In 2022, inverters were installed in 10 AHUs, reducing annual energy consumption by 360 MWh, a 38.6% decrease. Rooftop Solar Power System: In 2024, a solar energy system with a capacity of 850 kWp was installed, reducing the mall’s total monthly electricity consumption by 2.8%. Thermal Insulation and Smart Windows: The mall incorporates insulation materials and smart window designs to minimize heat loss while maximizing natural light usage. Green Landscaping: Strategic placement of greenery helps create a cooler environment, reducing reliance on air conditioning. Additional energy-saving initiatives include the use of inverters for wastewater treatment blowers, motion sensors on escalators, and air curtains at entrances to maintain indoor temperatures efficiently. Operational Efficiency Enhancements Beyond technical solutions, Aeon Mall Ha Dong has optimized its daily operations to improve energy efficiency. Using Building Management Systems (BMS) and Data Management Systems (DMS), the mall monitors energy consumption in real-time, adjusting operations accordingly. Key operational changes include: Adjusting chiller temperature settings to reduce energy usage. Reducing fan operating hours and implementing rotational shutdowns for AHUs. Optimizing display cabinet operation times and modifying lighting schedules. As a result of these measures, the mall achieved a 2% reduction in total energy consumption in 2024, saving approximately 500,000 kWh of electricity. Future Energy Efficiency Projects Looking ahead, Aeon Mall Ha Dong plans to introduce additional sustainability initiatives. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Khang, Head of the Technical Team at Aeon Delight Vietnam, upcoming projects include: Solar-powered lighting for parking areas to leverage renewable energy. Automatic filter cleaning systems for chillers to enhance cooling efficiency and reduce electricity use. Optimized inverter frequency adjustments for air conditioning and ventilation systems to improve overall operational efficiency. With these ongoing and future initiatives, Aeon Mall Ha Dong continues to reinforce its commitment to sustainability while maintaining cost-effective operations in Vietnam’s growing retail sector.
